A Lasting Legacy

News

“Life is like a three-layer cake. When you are young, there are two layers between you and death. Then your grandfather dies, and there is only one layer. Then your father dies. You are on top.”

This was a quote I read from a column by Gary North as he was describing what his father said to him in a profound statement of insight.  I continued on and the article was provoked more and more to thought and as I reached the bottom I got a sense of motivation.  Motivation to try harder, go farther, and accomplish more than I first thought; I am now on the “Second Layer” of the cake and quickly moving up.

This article gave me insight into what Jesus said about how the “meek will inherit the Earth”.  It considers how death is the balancing force for man and how see time differently as we grow older therefore spurning us to work harder to accomplish our task.

Fortunately, I have discovered what it is I enjoy and now I need to work to bring about a “Purpose” for the direction I have chosen.  If the article were discussing legacy as a means to an end, it would not be a legacy worth having.  So my goal is not the notoriety of a legacy but instead it is a goal of purpose and a desire to make an imprint. A legacy is what comes as a result of a person’s work doing that which God created him to do.  If he chooses to be wise (wisdom is gained from spending time in prayer) in what he does he will succeed to fulfill the work he was designed to do.

Its more than what you do that creates the Legacy, its how you live.  You can have either a good legacy or a bad legacy but how you live and the values you have indicate which direction your legacy will go.  So for example one of my heroes Ron Paul, he has been in congress for 11 terms and every vote and every endorsement has been on track with his values.  These values are those of his faith and they direct his actions.  Actions like “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”, in the form of Taxation, Government Control, and the Welfare/Warfare State. His legacy is this, what he began as a liberation to the people of America has sparked a movement that is larger and more dispersed than anyone would have thought.  His love of Freedom of Thought and Deed is directed by his view that he is responsible for only himself, others are responsible for themselves, and ultimately everyone is responsible to God.   How he lives has changed the world and begun a movement.

So why do I write this?  In part it is to reflect my desire not to go down in history as Gary North said, it is the person whose history is unknown who makes the biggest difference.  How?  The more dispersed the imprint the less noticeable it is.  So the more that I can imprint others by opening their eyes and giving them truth, the more my legacy can continue.  God is laying the path, I am laying the ground work, God is completing my purpose…or shall I say, Legacy.
