Time to Enjoy the Bounty of the Harvest!

Farming, Furnature Making

Its getting close to harvest time. Many crops are already ready to picked in my garden and others are not.

Corn:
Wow what a great production of corn this year. Last year the winds had knocked over all my corn and they didnt do very well at all. This year I thought I would plant shorter rows with more rows. The logic behind that was to create a wind barrier (with on or two rows) to keep the other rows from getting pushed over by wind…And it worked! We had one storm that came and blew pretty hard against the south side of the corn and the first row fell over but leaned up against the other rows and the other rows stayed up!

The corn has turned from a green to a red color now and looks like it should be in September by now but it has produced a lot of ears. I picked all the ears and have found ears almost 13″ long!!! This breed (Country Gentileman-heirloom variety from Baker Creek Seed Company) is a great strain of corn I had no issues with pests with exception of a few “stink bugs” (sorry I dont know the actual name) but all they did was walk on the plants and did no damage.

Tomatoes:
Well Finally! I have tomatoes. Now I just need to get to get all the plants propped up. I only have a few that are propped and the others are laying on the ground. Gee some kind of farmer I am!! I have had so much to do with getting the house and property ready for sale and for a big get together we have coming up that I couldn’t get out to the garden. I have picked a tomato that was 4.5″ in diameter!! I forgot to take a picture thought before I ate it…I know you all are saying “sure you got one that big”.

Green Beans:
OH My Goodness!!!! I got beans coming out of my ears!!!!! I pick the beans and the next weekend I have as many if not more than I picked the previous weekend!! I picked 20 pounds of green beans this last time and I would be willing to bet there is another 20 pounds now on the vines!

Broccoli:
I am not sure if I will get any broccoli this year. My broccoli plants are about 24 inches high and still have not made heads. After the cabbage worms almost killed them I have a lot of new leaves growing. So I am not sure when I will be able to harvest them.

Lettuce:
My leaf lettuce (Amish Deer Tongue) has produced a lot of lettuce for us this year. It is now seeding out. We are still picking lettuce when we need it and it keeps growing upward producing more leaves. I am going to harvest the seed in a few days. Maybe Sunday after Church.

Carrots:
I have learned a lot this year and one is be sure to thin out those crops that have tiny seed and grow a lot in one place. My carrots are one example of what not to do. I have so many plants growing in close proximity to each other that they are producing little bitty carrots. Hardly big enough to eat. They are about 2 inches long and about a half inch around…if that. I think that I will also try planting them next year on a mound.

Onions:
I have picked all the onions out of the garden. They reached the size of about 3 inches around and the tops died out so I figured I would pick em.

Potatoes:
I have dug up all my potatoes and I think I have less now then when I planted. Next year I have decided that I am going to weigh the potatoes before planting them then weigh them afterwards to see if I yielded anything.

Thats all for the garden I now thought I would show off some of my Craftsmanship.

The Table:
We have a big get together coming up this Saturday and I thought “where is everyone going to sit?”. So I decided to build a table…but not just any table. A table that would sit a lot of people and be useful someday to us for our house! I have plans for the future to build my own house (which I will begin posting here when I have arrived at that place in my life) and so figured that I would need a good table. Below are a few pictures of the table I built. I reused wood from a building that was torn down from Evangel University where I work.
I will, in the future, finish the table out so that it looks nicer. Some sanding…staining…and clear coating will be done to it when I finally move the table indoors but for now it will be used outside.
I only bought 2 2×4-10 to make a nicer edge on the top. All the other wood was free and reused. I am happy with it.

The table is 9 foot 6 inches long and about 3 foot 6 inches wide.

The legs are made to be able to unbolt them so that the table can be taken through a door.

And I had to take a picture of my wife Brandy setting on the table so you could have a scale of the size. The table is so solid that it doesnt budge when pushed against.

Thanks for taking a look everyone. I hope you enjoyed.
