I had a good night of fiddlin’ last night at McClurg (place in southern Missouri) I played some of my new tunes (Molly put the kettle on and My old home) and I played a tune that has been pretty hard for me to play (Soldiers Joy) but I played it well.
Well I really did it this time. I was setting a roll of duct tape on the shelf above my workbench and I turned around and it fell off the shelf…what does that have to do with any thing, you ask?
Well the tape just so happened to fall right on top of the face plate of the fiddle I am working on. It broke it clean in 3 places and cracked in another. This will make for a more difficult restoration. When I said I wanted to learn to repair fiddles I didn’t want to have to learn this way.

This is going to be a pain in the backside just because I didn’t have to do this and it really frustrates me that I have to slow down the repair to fix a self inflicted break.
I finally have bought the new fingerboard from Alvie (because I didn’t want to make one this time-I will when I make a whole fiddle). Now I need to shape it to the size of my neck and that means I need another tool. Belt sander! I don’t think I have any more room for any more tools…guess Ill figure out something.
